Chapter 29: Training Domain

I am thrown back into reality. The vision seems like a distant memory, and my brain fog already begins to clear up. When everything in the real world becomes crisp and clear, I notice that the corpse cube has dissolved into ash. The solution in the cauldron is gone as well. Even the gas lamp flickers, barely lit.

Maria’s eyes snap open. She gasps, gagging and coughing. She almost stumbles to the floor, but I grab her arm and guide her to a standing position. Tears—not of sadness, but of sickness—form in the corner of her eyes. She groans and clutches her temples.

“... Are you alright?’ I manage to ask her.

“I’m fine,” she snaps at me. It’s unnecessarily aggressive, but I don’t blame her for what she’s seen. “That was… something. I don’t understand any of it at all. But if you do, and it helps you save my child, then it’s worth it…” She coughs.

I realize that she is indeed sick. It must be the bad air here.

“It definitely helped me,” I say cautiously. But Maria is no longer looking at me. She stumbles out of the room, leaving me to think for myself.

Quinn comes out of my pocket with an annoyed look on his face. “Why didn’t you mix a little of my blood in there? I wanted to see it as well!”

“I would have cut you in half with that needle,” I deadpan. “But that… it’s not something you want to see. But it proves a few things. First, Asmodeus’ eyes are very much on me.” I look at the corner of the room, as if the Demon God is there, watching. “And he has sent his minions from other timelines into this one. I don’t know how, but as a god, he must have a skill that allows him to do it.”

“Then…” Quinn starts, leaving me to confirm his thoughts.

I nod.

“Yume Chelsea is a subordinate of Asmodeus. In fact, he was once one of his only two disciples in another timeline.”

Little crackle-pops begin to go off in rapid succession around Quinn’s head. It’s clear that he is furious. And I would expect him to be, as well. We are not closer to finding the [Runemaster’s Shroud], and Asmodeus himself stands in our way.

It feels hopeless.

But it is not. I know it is not, because I am Kim Snow.

The greatest blade.

The destined.

Chosen.

That is who I am.

“JOHAN!” I roar with as much force I can muster. “I REQUIRE YOUR COUNSEL!”

Johan steps into the room in an instant, though he seems confused. “You require… my counsel? For what, Sir Knight?”

“You offered to train me, didn’t you? Then train me.” My voice trembles with excitement. This feeling… How long has it been? I am not strong anymore. I am not bound to my previous beliefs, and techniques long past. I need to strive for more, and learn things I am uncomfortable with. “Train me, and bring me to new heights. Because in three days, we will march upon the Gold Legion.
